We have been hard at work on our lesson plans over the past couple months. We try to come up with educational, fun, creative and visually pleasing lessons for our Korean Middle School Students. We also try to make lessons that can appeal to both low and high level classes by omitting some things and/or helping out more or less with hints, etc. We hope you find these resources helpful and if you like them we would love to hear from you about your experience. Have a great day.
These are ESL worksheets which we have put together and used in our classes. We teach ESL to Korean Middle School students grades one and two (Considered seventh and eight graders in American school systems).

Reward System – Many of the schools where we have taught or heard about in South Korea do not allow the English teachers to give their students grades, and even if they did, many times failing grades don’t hinder a student from moving up to the next grade anyway. Because of this, a lot of students in our classes did not have the motivation to listen, participate and learn in our classes – That is, until we came up with this system. Here’s how it works:
- Each student receives one stamp card to tape or glue in their books or notebooks
- They are shown the presentation on how the reward system works
- They start participating to earn candy.
NOTE: You will need to buy your own candy or candy bars for this as we could not figure out a way for you to download them through our site;-)

Pick-A-Student – One of the struggles we have had as ESL teachers is getting the students to participate. Many of our students are shy when it comes to speaking English in front of their classmates and sometimes refuse to participate when we call on them. We developed this teaching tool with the help of a very smart friend of ours who programed the random number generator for us. Here’s how it works:
- Cut out and tape or otherwise affix the numbers to the students’ desks
- When it is time to call a student up, go here and click the “Go!” button
- Enjoy watching the students faces, joy and sorrow as they are passed over or picked by the computer;-)
TIP: We recommend getting the last student to go to hit the random number generator for the next student. That way whoever is picked was not picked by the teacher in any way and that usually gets a better response. Enjoy!

The Name Game Version 2.0 – Objects, Animals and Nature – The Name Game 2.0 presents the students with a series of pictures of objects and animals which they will need to describe to two or three students at the front of the room who are facing away from the screen. The object of the game is to get the students excited about using English to describe the picture without saying the name of the object in the picture. We have found this game usually works best by dividing the students into teams and then having them compete to win. This game idea can be easily modified to acomidate for thing like vocabulary review, chapter reviews and more. If you are looking for a good incentive system to get your kids to participate more actively, check out our free ESL Student Incentive Package. Enjoy!

Sounding Out and Spelling Words – In this two part lesson, we teach the students the different sounds that each latter can make and then play a game to get them to practice sounding out the letters for guessing the spelling. This can be used as two lessons and is divided into 2 parts within the presentation. Feel free to them one at a time or together if you have the time. The first part is a little boring for most students and we warn them of this fact, but promise them it will help them in the second part with is a game! They really enjoy the game in our experience and even have requested to play it instead of have free time in some higher level classes. Christmas Rhyming Game – The Christmas Rhyming Game presents the students with a series of riddles for which they must guess the answers. The presentation is set in such a way that if you need to show them a picture, without revealing the word, for a hint, you can. This allows the presentation to be used for both low and higher level classes. Again, we have found this game usually works best by dividing the students into teams and then having them compete to win. This template could also be edited for other holidays such a Thanksgiving, Halloween and more very easily.
