Griffin had been saving for the ring for a while and wanted the engagement to be something very memorable. He consulted with his family for some ideas and one of the resulting ideas was to propose at an upcoming Auburn scrimmage game. Because of Valerie's love of Auburn football, this seemed to be the most unique and memorable plan.
Griffin drove the 6 hours round trip the week before the game to meet with Valerie's dad and ask permission to marry his daughter. When he approved, Griffin invited him and the rest of Valerie's family to the game, but with the understanding they would stay hidden until after the proposal so the surprise would not be ruined.
Valerie and Griffin met Griffin's family and his friend Mark at the game and after the game was over, headed down to the field to take some pictures. Griffin and Valerie took some pictures with Auburn's mascot Aubie, who was in on the surprise and then he held up a banner Griffin had made that said "Valerie Sylvester, Griffin has a question he would like to ask you." When Valerie turned around, Griffin was down on one knee with the ring asking her to marry him and she said yes!
